Königssee

Königssee was our lunch stop. The lake nestles at the foot of Mount Watzmann.
We have visited here during the summer months, so it was great to see it under the snow.
Königssee translates as King's Lake.
It is one of Germany's deepest lakes at 190 metres.
The lake is known to be Germany's cleanest lake. Only electric boats are able to sail on it. Passenger boats operate every day except Christmas day. There is no path around the lake, so a boat trip is the only way to view the lake's shores and the mountains that surround it.

There are quite a few tourist shops here. We visited on a Sunday, so all the shops were closed.

No problem finding somewhere for lunch though! We found a cosy cafe/bar called Brötzeitstüberl and had goulash soup with semmel.
It's one of the best we've tasted.

Thumsee Lake in January

When the snow had stopped falling we went to Lake Thumsee on the outskirts of Bad Reichenhall, Bavaria. We followed the path that takes you around the lake. There are many walks and hikes that start from here, although more accessible in better weather.

The lake is also a popular bathing spot in the summer months. Absolutely no way you'd want to go in at this time of year!

The surface of the lake had frozen over in areas and more snow had settled on the top.

It was great to see so much snow.

Andrew on a mission to find refreshment!😉🍺

How pleasing is this neatly stored wood pile?

There is a steep staircase that takes you up to St. Pankraz Kirche. The church is only occasionally used. There were 365 steps, one for every day of the year, but after refurbishment there are now 300. There was a barrier preventing people using the steps as it was too dangerous underfoot. We hope to go up and look inside another day.

At the end of our walk we passed this barn that had been built around a tree!

In search of lunch we drove on to Lake Konigssee which will feature in my next post...
Thanks for reading.

Snowy landing at Salzburg

Welcome!

I thought I'd have a go at writing a blog 😏

This should be an easier way to keep family, friends (and anyone else who may be interested!) up to date with what I see, do, like, not like... from wherever I may be.

To get it off the ground here are a couple of photos that I took from the plane as we landed in Salzburg earlier this month.

I'm going to be living near Salzburg for a good part of this year.
